Young Scientist Apprentice “Lures” SAMTSH Students To Chemistry

KLANG – Some 120 Science stream students of Sekolah Agama Menengah Tinggi Sultan Hisamuddin, Klang, Selangor (SAMTSH) took part in a Young Scientist Apprentice (YSA) programme recently.

The programme was held in collaboration with  Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Science Faculty Graduates Society and Young Scientist Network-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM).

Programme advisor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Kar Ban said the programme helped to send the right information on their choice of studies to participants who will be sitting for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

“In a way, this programme helps to inculcate awareness and interest among students on Chemistry, its theories and applications as well as helping them to keep themselves abreast with the developments in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), all for their own good,” he said.

The programme conducted by 28 members from the Chemistry Undergraduates Club, Faculty of Science, UPM, also saw the involvement of several lecturers from the Chemistry Department of UPM.

Various interesting activities related to Chemistry and Sciences were held throughout the programmes, including Science Toon Competition, Krakatoa Mountain Eruption, Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), Water Rocket Launching and Parachute.

Besides that a Science Station slot that enabled students to experience for themselves various experiments with the aid of facilitators, was also held. Such activities will spark their interests for chemistry where they will be able to apply all the theories that they have learned in classroom.

Form Five student, Irdina Nadia, 17, said she was excited and had fun taking part in all the activities as she was able to get some input from each activity.

Speaking at the closing of the programmme, SAMTSH Principal, Nadzarah Mahmud expressed her hope that the programme will inspire students and make them more interested to master Chemistry to help the school improves on its performance in SPM. - UPM
